Winter Camping in Squamish Valley: A Father & Son Adventure That Almost Didn’t Happen ❄️🔥
There’s something about winter camping that tests you—your patience, your mindset, and your willingness to embrace the unexpected. For us at Vancity Adventure, this trip into the breathtaking Squamish Valley turned into one of those unforgettable experiences that didn’t go as planned… but ended up being exactly what we needed.
Chasing Adventure in the Snow
Cayden and I set out with a clear goal: find the perfect riverside campsite deep in the valley. Snow was falling steadily, blanketing the forest and transforming the landscape into a true winter wonderland. The roads were rough, icy, and unpredictable—but that’s all part of the adventure.
Our truck pushed forward through the bumpy backroads, tires crunching through snow, as we made our way toward a spot we had in mind along the river.
Then everything changed.
When Plans Fall Apart
Just as we neared our destination, we were stopped in our tracks—a massive landslide had completely blocked the road.
No way through. No way around.
Disappointed and frustrated, we turned around. For a moment, it felt like the trip was over before it really even began. That defeated feeling started to creep in—the kind every adventurer knows all too well.
But instead of heading straight home, we made a decision:
Let’s see what we can find.
The Unexpected Campsite
On the way back, something caught our eye—a quiet spot tucked beside the river. It wasn’t the plan, but it was perfect in its own way.
We pulled in, set up camp, and got a fire going as snow continued to fall around us. There’s nothing quite like sitting by a crackling fire in the middle of winter, surrounded by silence, snow, and nature.
This is what it’s all about.
A Night to Remember
As the temperature dropped, we settled into the tent with the heater keeping things warm and comfortable. Outside, the world was frozen and still.
Then came one of those moments you never forget.
In the middle of the night, I stepped into complete darkness… only to look up and see the sky absolutely lit up with stars. No city lights. No noise. Just the sound of the river flowing beside us and a sky full of endless stars.
It was pure magic.
Morning in the Valley
We woke up to a crisp winter morning. The fire came back to life, warming our hands as we slowly packed up camp. Steam rose from our breath, and the river kept flowing beside us—steady, peaceful, unchanged.
What started as a failed plan turned into an incredible experience.
Why These Trips Matter
This trip reminded us of something important:
Adventure isn’t about perfect plans—it’s about how you adapt when things go sideways.
The landslide didn’t ruin our trip—it made it better.
Moments like these are why we do what we do at Vancity Adventure. It’s not just about the destination. It’s about the journey, the setbacks, and the memories you create along the way—especially when you’re sharing them with your kid.
Final Thoughts
If you’re thinking about winter camping—do it. Expect challenges. Expect things to go wrong. But also expect moments that will stay with you forever.
Because sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned.
