When Everything Falls Apart: How One Builder Found a New Purpose Through Vancity Adventure
Success is often measured by what people can see.
The finished homes. The growing business. The employees. The company trucks. The social media posts that make everything look like it’s going according to plan.
What people rarely see are the sleepless nights, the financial pressure, the difficult conversations, or the weight of carrying the responsibility for an entire company.
This is the story behind Ridgewater Homes Ltd.—and how the hardships of entrepreneurship ultimately inspired the creation of Vancity Adventure.
Building a Dream
In 2013, I founded Ridgewater Homes Ltd. with a vision of building quality custom homes while creating a company built on craftsmanship, integrity, and trust.
Like many small businesses, our journey had its share of victories and setbacks.
We were fortunate to work with incredible clients who appreciated our work and became lifelong friends. We also encountered projects that challenged us in ways we never imagined.
Every project taught us something.
Every obstacle made us stronger.
In 2015, we signed what we believed would be one of our most exciting custom home projects. After years of planning, engineering, and municipal approvals, construction finally began in 2019.
Everything appeared to be moving in the right direction.
Then the world changed.

The Pandemic That Changed Everything
When COVID-19 arrived in 2020, the construction industry faced challenges unlike anything it had experienced before.
Projects slowed.
Supply chains collapsed.
Material prices skyrocketed.
Uncertainty became the new normal.
At the same time, one major project left our company carrying approximately $250,000 in unpaid costs, creating enormous financial strain. The impact was immediate and heartbreaking.
I was forced to lay off our team of 11 employees.
That remains one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.
These weren’t simply employees—they were people with families, mortgages, and lives that depended on steady work. Watching years of growth disappear almost overnight was devastating.
Trying to Rebuild
Like many business owners, I refused to give up.
In 2021, we accepted another custom home project, believing it would help rebuild what had been lost.
Instead, we faced challenge after challenge.
Design issues.
Hydro complications.
Incorrect drawings.
Constant client-requested changes.
And material prices that seemed to increase every week.
Plywood climbed from around $40 a sheet to well over $100.
Glass prices increased dramatically.
Nearly every building material became more expensive and harder to obtain.
As the project became increasingly difficult to manage, we seriously considered walking away. After discussions with the homeowner, we decided to continue.
A week later, we were terminated from the project.
Legal proceedings followed, and those matters remain ongoing. Because those proceedings are still before the courts, I won’t comment on the legal merits beyond saying that they have had a profound impact on my family, my finances, and my future.
In 2022, Ridgewater Homes Ltd. closed its doors.
Even after the company ceased operations, the financial and legal challenges continued.
More Than Losing a Business
People often think bankruptcy is simply about losing money.
The truth is, it’s about losing something you poured your heart into.
It’s about questioning every decision.
It’s about wondering what you could have done differently.
It’s about carrying stress long after the doors have closed.
That kind of pressure changes you.
It forces you to rethink what success really means.
Finding Perspective Outdoors
During the darkest chapter of my life, I discovered something that no courtroom, business meeting, or financial statement could provide.
Perspective.
The mountains reminded me how small our problems can seem.
The forests reminded me to slow down.
The open road reminded me there is always another destination ahead.
Spending time outdoors with my family became more than a weekend escape.
It became therapy.
It became healing.
It became hope.

The Birth of Vancity Adventure
That’s how Vancity Adventure was born.
It isn’t just about overlanding.
It isn’t just about modifying trucks.
It isn’t just about camping.
It’s about resilience.
It’s about showing that even after life’s hardest setbacks, you can choose to keep moving forward.
Every trail tells a story.
Every campsite creates a memory.
Every adventure reminds us that the best moments in life aren’t measured by profits—they’re measured by experiences shared with the people you love and driven by passion.
Looking Forward
The legal journey isn’t over.
The financial challenges haven’t disappeared.
But they no longer define who I am.
Today, my focus is on building something different.
Not another construction company.
A community.
A place where people who love adventure, family, exploration, and the outdoors can come together and be inspired.
If my story helps even one person realize they are not alone in facing setbacks, then sharing it has been worthwhile.
Life doesn’t always follow the plans we draw.
Sometimes the strongest foundations aren’t poured in concrete—they’re built through perseverance, faith, family, and the courage to begin again.
That’s what Vancity Adventure is really about.
It’s not about escaping life.
It’s about rediscovering it.
It’s worth telling.
