What Is Overlanding? Discovering the World, One Dirt Road at a Time
But if you ask me, that definition only scratches the surface.
For us at Vancity Adventure, overlanding is how we explore the world—not just geographically, but emotionally and spiritually. It’s about escaping the noise, embracing simplicity, and finding unforgettable moments in places most people never see.
The Heart of Overlanding
Overlanding isn’t about speed or luxury—it’s about intentional travel. It’s not camping. It’s not off-roading. It’s a combination of both, blended with self-reliance, discovery, and the freedom to take the road less traveled.
Imagine this: You’re deep in the wilderness. No Wi-Fi (but now we have Starlink). No crowds. Just your rig, your family, and the wide-open trail ahead. You’re cooking meals off-grid, relying on your own gear, and soaking in views you had to earn.
That’s overlanding.
Our Overlanding Setup
We started our journey with a RAM 1500 and transformed it into a full-blown overland build. Rooftop tent, fridge, solar setup, onboard power, lighting, recovery gear—you name it, we’ve tested it. It’s our rolling basecamp, our shelter in storms, and our vehicle to freedom.
Every piece of gear we’ve added serves a purpose. And every modification reflects the lessons we’ve learned out on the trail.
Why We Chose This Lifestyle
During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we felt trapped—like many people did. But instead of waiting for the world to open up, we created our own escape route. My son Cayden and I packed up our truck, brought along our pug Tosha, and hit the road.
We didn’t know what we’d find, but we knew we needed something different.
That first trip turned into many more. Before we knew it, Vancity Adventure became more than just a name—it became a philosophy.
Overlanding Is for Everyone
The best part? You don’t need a massive rig or expensive gear to start overlanding.
All you really need is a reliable vehicle, a sense of adventure, and the willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
Whether you’re doing weekend trips to the mountains or multi-week expeditions across states or provinces, the overlanding mindset is the same: explore responsibly, travel self-sufficiently, and leave no trace.
What You Learn Along the Way
Overlanding teaches you to problem-solve on the fly, slow down, appreciate nature, and respect the wild places we visit. It’s humbling and empowering at the same time.
And for families like ours, it’s also the ultimate bonding experience.
No distractions, no deadlines—just the road, the rig, and each other.
Ready to Explore?
If you’ve been wondering what overlanding is all about, I hope this gives you a glimpse of why we love it—and why we believe it can change lives.
This lifestyle has taken us from BC’s backroads to the deserts of Utah and beyond. It’s connected us with other incredible overlanders, sparked meaningful conversations at expos and rallies, and introduced Cayden to a world of curiosity, resilience, and wonder.
If you’re looking for an adventure that goes beyond the ordinary… welcome to the world of overlanding.
